About the Journal

Conservar Património is a scientific journal that aims to publish twice a year research papers related to conservation-restoration in its various modalities and perspectives. It is also interested in papers from other fields of knowledge, such as history of art, archaeology, museum studies, chemistry, physics and biology or others, about the materials and the techniques employed in cultural heritage works.

The journal is published by the Associação Profissional de Conservadores Restauradores de Portugal (ARP). The authors are not obliged to a relationship with ARP. The journal is happy to receive any paper submissions that reflect its editing policy and quality standards. Although submitted papers constitute the essence of each volume, the Editors and the Editorial Board may invite collaboration from authors with relevant knowledge in the journals universe and interests.

The submitted papers must not have been published or have been submitted elsewhere.

Types of collaboration

The journal has different section headings according to the content nature of the submitted papers. The available sections are listed below:

  • Articles, for the main contributions. The papers may present conservation treatments done with the support of other fields of knowledge,  studies not directly connected to conservation-restoration interventions, or reviews about subjects related to materials, techniques, history and intervention methodologies;
  • Interventions, for contributions reporting on conservation interventions without laboratory studies support or others;
  • Notes, for contributions similar to those included in articles and interventions, but smaller in size;
  • Opinions, for personal but relevant opinions on different conservation aspects and for reports on relevant occurrences or reviews of published materials. Letters and comments about published contributions are also included here.

Review

All the contributions submitted for publication are subject to a first general review from the Editors to ascertain that it is within the journal scope and objectives. After passing this first stage, the papers are subjected to peer reviewing. The Editorial Board will participate as often as possible in this stage of review. Invited contributions are not subjected to this type of reviewing. Contributions for the Opinions section may be reviewed solely by the Editors.

The authors' opinion does not necessarily have to coincide with ARP or with the journal's Editors or Editorial Board. The authors are solely responsible for their opinions, even when modifications to the manuscript are suggested in the review process.

Languages

Although the Portuguese language is privileged, other languages may be accepted for publishing, namely English, French or Spanish. The papers destined to the Articles, Interventions and Notes sections must contain a Portuguese and an English title and abstract and, if written in another language, must also incorporate the title and abstract in that language.

Manuscript organization

All papers except for those destined for the Opinions section must obey the following structure: Title written in the native language, as well as in Portuguese and English, authors names and affiliation, respective contacts, abstract, keywords, text, acknowledgements, references, tables and figures.

The abstracts must not be over 300 words and must function as a separate text without referring to the main text. The abstracts should be written in Portuguese, English and the original language if it should be different. A maximum of five keywords should also be presented in Portuguese, English and the original language.

The papers should be divided in sections and subsections in accordance with its content. This is especially important for the longer texts. Normally, the sections and subsections should not be numbered.

The orthographic and grammatical review should be done carefully. Footnotes should be avoided and reference marks should be numbered between straight brackets.

Tables and figures may be used, and should be thus designated, not as images, photos, photographs, illustrations, schemes or other. All tables and figures must be referenced in the text by their respective numbers. They should be placed at the end of the text, each with its respective legend on a separate sheet. The authors must gain the necessary permission to use the figures or other copyright materials. Note should be taken that the impression is monochromatic. Exceptions to this may eventually be contemplated. It is possible however to have color copies of the figures and tables for consulting purposes on the website.

References should be listed at the end of the manuscript, numbered in accordance with the text citations and the following styles.

The references list at the end should be written in accordance with the Studies in Conservation journal guides. They may be consulted at (http://www.iiconservation.org/publications/sic/sic.php).
